Celebrating 20 years of kids in parks: inspiring young conservationists

This year, South African National Parks (SANParks) celebrates a significant milestone: the 20th anniversary of its Kids in Parks programme, which has introduced over 80,000 young learners to the wonders of conservation and heritage since its inception in 2004.

The programme, a collaboration between SANParks, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), and the Department of Basic Education (DBE), offers learners a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of South Africa’s national parks through three-day excursions.

These trips are more than just fun outings; they focus on educating young minds about biodiversity, ecosystems, and cultural heritage, aiming to foster a deep connection with nature and instil an appreciation for the environment.

Currently, the programme operates at Bontebok, Garden Route (including Knysna & Tsitsikamma), Mapungubwe, Marakele, Mokala, and Golden Gate Highlands National Parks.

This year alone, more than 3,450 learners from local schools will participate in the programme, with the aim of reaching even more in the coming years.

The initiative remains a vital tool in creating opportunities for disadvantaged learners, encouraging environmental awareness, and inspiring future conservation leaders.

In a historic move, SANParks has committed direct funding to support the programme in the next financial year.

This marks the first time in two decades that SANParks is directly funding the initiative, a significant departure from the previous reliance on sponsorships.

This new financial commitment ensures that the Kids in Parks programme can continue to thrive and grow, expanding its reach to all of South Africa’s national parks.

It’s a bold step towards the sustainability of the programme and reflects SANParks’ dedication to environmental education and youth development.

Aligned with SANParks Vision 2040, the future of Kids in Parks is focused on growth and innovation.

As national parks evolve into dynamic hubs for learning, creativity, and exploration, the programme will introduce cutting-edge educational tools that encourage young learners to connect with nature in new and engaging ways.

Through these efforts, SANParks hopes to inspire the next generation of conservationists and environmental stewards who will protect South Africa’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
