CAPE Town hip hop artist Raf Don has released his latest single with hit female rappers, Toya Delazy and Dee Koala.

The track “She Wan” is a feel good jam that will get listeners in the mood to dance.

“She Wan” is a women empowerment track and fits within the genre of drill music, which is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in Chicago just over a decade ago.

Raf Don said when people hear of drill music, they immediately think of street, underground, hardcore lyrics and lifestyle - an idea he wanted to change.

“I wanted to create the first South African drill song that doesn’t highlight that. This is a track heavily dominated by females, for females,” he said.

“That’s why I wanted to have two females artists on the track execute the song in their own unique way.”

Raf Don said he had made it his mission to be a pioneer and front-runner for drill music in South Africa.

“The creative process is always fun because I always want to experiment with new things to add to the genre that will connect music to a different South African demographic,” he said.

“My producer Shaney Jay and sound engineer Loulu Verb understand exactly what I’m trying to achieve,” he added.

On working with the other two artists, Raf Don said he was fond of collaborations and adding an element of surprise.

“No one would have expected to hear Toya Delazy and Dee Koala on a track together, let alone a track done on a drill beat,” he said.

He continued: “It’s always good to see artists from two different backgrounds come together and create something special like this.”

Dee Koala said she had been impressed with Raf Don’s work in the past.

“This collaboration made me very excited as it is something different. I am happy to be on this track,” she said.

“Working with Raf is so much fun. When we recorded (the song), it felt like being surrounded by family which made it so much easier to work on.”

“She Wan” is available for download on all streaming platforms.
