Are you looking to dive into the vibrant world of theatre? Do you want to enhance your skills, connect with like-minded individuals, and explore your creativity? If so, The Masque invites you to their third annual Volunteer Open Day, taking place on Sunday, 25th May, from 2pm to 4pm. This event serves as your backstage pass to all things theatrical and offers a unique opportunity to engage with a community dedicated to the arts.

"Join us for an afternoon of theatre, connection, and discovery. We're celebrating our amazing volunteers and inviting new faces to see what makes our theatre community so special,” said Christine Kaye, Head of Community at The Masque. This open day is about more than just performances; it’s about redefining what it means to be part of a theatre family.

The Masque operates largely thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of its volunteers. Kaye emphasises that there are numerous roles to fill, beyond just standing in the spotlight.

“Some people don’t realise that The Masque is powered by volunteers, or that there are a myriad of roles you can play. You also don’t need to commit to every project or every show. We have a roster and a schedule which you can fit in with according to your other commitments,” she said.

This year, the Volunteer Open Day promises a fresh format, designed to provide an entertaining and insightful glimpse into the various facets of volunteering at The Masque. Attendees can look forward to:

  • “Behind the Masque” – A Theatrical Farce: Directed by Kerith Coulson, witness a hilarious short play set amidst the chaos of opening night.
  • Meet the Team & Tour the Theatre: Get acquainted with different sectors within The Masque, from Tech to Productions, as well as an exploration of the theatre’s rich history and impact on the community.
  • Beyond the Stage: Discover volunteer opportunities in areas such as the Youth Theatre Club, wardrobe, workshops, and much more.
  • Connect & Chat: Enjoy complimentary tea or coffee while mingling with fellow theatre enthusiasts.
  • FOH Training: Engage in a practical Front of House training session at the end of the day.
  • Special Offer: Sign up for a Masque Theatre membership at a reduced volunteer rate of R50/year, exclusively during the Open Day.

“Our Volunteer Open Day isn’t just about welcoming new and returning volunteers—it’s also a chance to hear from the passionate people who keep The Masque thriving,” adds Kaye. From the head of programming to the technical crew, attendees will have the chance to converse with those who bring The Masque to life.

Whether you are drawn to acting, stage management, or engaging directly with audiences, The Masque team is eager to showcase the myriad ways you can contribute to this beloved theatre community. As Kaye aptly puts it, “Come for the laughs, stay for the community—because theatre isn’t just about what happens on stage; it’s about the people who make it happen.”

Mark your calendars for Sunday, 25th May from 2pm - 4pm at The Masque, located at 37 Main Rd, Muizenberg, Cape Town, 7950.
