Durban - A man handed himself to police after a fellow motorist was shot six times in an alleged road rage incident on a busy Chatsworth street on Thursday.

He allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing at close range after an argument.

The incident took place at about midday near a petrol station on RK Khan Circle, opposite Chatsworth Stadium.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said a 21-year-old man was shot dead.

“It is alleged that the driver of a blue Honda Civic was parked on Road 602 when he was approached by the driver of a maroon Golf. An altercation ensued. The driver of the Golf was shot whilst seated in his vehicle,” Zwane said.

“The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A passenger in the Golf did not sustain any injuries.”

About 45 minutes later, the suspect, aged 46, handed himself to the police at Chatsworth SAPS, Zwane said.

Onlookers said they heard an argument and the sound of screeching tyres. In a matter of seconds gunshots went off. The driver of the Honda got out of the car and fired several shots.

The Golf rolled about 50m down RK Khan circle, passing through a busy intersection, said bystanders. A man walking nearby ran towards the car and pulled up the handbrake to stop the car from colliding into others.

The driver of the Honda sped off and later drove to the police station.

Police arrived at the scene and closed the road to traffic and curious onlookers from a nearby shopping centre.

A source at the scene said one of the bullet cartridges was found on the dashboard.

The young man was apparently shot twice in the arm, as well as in the back and neck.

Onlookers said it was fortunate that no one else was hit in the shooting.

Relatives of the deceased who arrived at the scene declined to comment to the media as they were too distraught.

Zwane said police were investigating a case of murder.

“The suspect will appear before the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”
