Public swimming pools across Cape Town will open their doors daily from Wednesday until October 5, offering residents and holidaymakers an opportunity to cool off as spring gets under way.

Facilities will operate from 10am to 5pm every day throughout the spring school holiday break.

However, the City confirmed that five municipal pools will not open during this period while essential maintenance, repairs, and redevelopment projects are carried out:

  • Westridge Swimming Pool
  • Bellville Central Swimming Pool
  • Mnandi Swimming Pool
  • Athlone Swimming Pool
  • Vulindela Swimming Pool

Major upkeep at Westridge, Bellville Central, Mnandi, and Athlone forms part of the municipality's routine infrastructure investment to maintain safe facilities.

These four locations will undergo safety inspections and quality assessments before being reopened on a phased basis.

The municipality will announce reopening dates once finalised.

Meanwhile, Vulindela Swimming Pool will remain closed for the entire summer season to allow for redesign and redevelopment planning.

Following the conclusion of the school holidays on October 5, operating hours across open facilities will shift to a reduced pre-summer schedule until December 1,2026:

  • Wednesdays to Fridays: 13:00 – 17:00
  • Saturdays and Sundays: 10:00 – 17:00

In preparation for the upcoming peak festive season, the Recreation and Parks Department is currently recruiting seasonal lifeguards to ensure adequate supervision across municipal facilities.

"Our public swimming pools are important community spaces where families and young people can get active, cool off, and enjoy time together," said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

“Most of our swimming pools will be open every day during the school holidays, giving families and young people an opportunity to get active and enjoy the warmer weather,” Higham said.

He urged visitors to prioritise safety during their visits by following pool regulations, cooperating with lifeguards, and ensuring children remain supervised at all times.

“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable visit, so please listen to our lifeguards, follow the pool rules and make sure children are supervised at all times,” Higham said.
