No Madlanga today? Citizens joke they don't know what to do as Commission takes a break

For months, explosive testimony, dramatic revelations and hearings have dominated South Africa's daily conversation but on Monday, the Madlanga Commission fell silent and thousands of devoted followers admitted the break had left an unexpected gap in their day.

The commission is not sitting on Monday and will resume public hearings on Tuesday after weeks of gripping evidence that has kept citizens glued to television screens, YouTube streams and social media timelines.

Last week's testimony, including evidence related to the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) formerly led by Advocate Andrea Johnson, added fresh momentum to the proceedings and reinforced why the inquiry remains one of the country's most closely watched public hearings.

Instead of following live witnesses and courtroom exchanges, many South Africans returned to their normal routines – heading to work, running businesses, commuting, studying and catching up on ordinary news.

Yet online, the mood was anything but ordinary.

"Having serious Madlanga withdrawal sickness this morning. Symptoms: Checking YouTube live streams, refreshing SABC News Channel, shocked at just the news. Checking Twitter feed and learning: No Madlanga today," wrote @lEsethuHasane.

Another user, @mthobisithela, posted: "No Madlanga Commission today! I don't know what to do with myself."

@No Madlanga Commission today and I'm already missing the witnesses' WhatsApp texts," added @Pule_EM.

While the posts were shared in jest, they highlighted the remarkable public interest the commission has generated.

As hearings resume on Tuesday, many South Africans will once again tune in, eager to follow every twist, every revelation and every moment of testimony in a process that continues to captivate the nation.
