Kent Morkel, chairman of the Cape Metropolitan Council's executive committee, on Thursday said he would not be standing for the post of unicity mayor.

His announcement followed the expulsion of CMC mayor William Bantom from the New National Party after Western Cape premier Gerald Morkel, Kent's father, claimed he was caught watching pornography in his office and downloading pornographic material off the Internet.

The African National Congress said the decision to expel Bantom from the NNP was a well-timed move to boost Kent Morkel's chances of becoming mayor of the Cape Town unicity.

Kent Morkel on Thursday refuted allegations that he stood to gain from his father's position as premier.

He said he had no intention of making himself available for the position of mayor at this time.

"I have taken this decision because I wish to avoid any suggestion that I am benefiting in any way from my father," Morkel said.

"Both he and I are determined that I should continue to make my own way in my political career, just as I have done for the past 17 years."

He said he would be a candidate for the new unicity council and looked forward to serving the Democratic Alliance and the people of Cape Town with enthusiasm, just as he had done for the past 17 months as chairperson of the CMC's executive committee.

"I have informed the leadership of the NNP of my decision," Kent Morkel said. - Sapa
