John Moodey will lead the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng after he was re-elected to the position at the party's provincial congress, the DA said on Monday.
"The DA in Gauteng believes that John Moodey will lead the party to victory in multiple municipalities in the province during the 2011 municipal elections," the DA in Gauteng said in a statement.
He was first elected to the position late in 2006 and re-elected at the congress on Saturday.
The party said Moodey, born in Doornfontein, grew the DA's support base in the province by 200 000 voters during his term.
"Under Moodey's stewardship, the DA has also won various by-elections in Gauteng, winning wards off the ANC and increasing support in areas where the DA had no history of support."
He began his professional career in 1977 as an administrative clerk in the Johannesburg municipality -- after his family was forcefully removed from Doornfontein under the Group Areas Act.
He became a member of the Democratic Party in 1998 and was elected chairman of the Florida branch. He joined the Gauteng legislature in 2004.
MPL in the Gauteng Legislature, Thomas Walters, was elected chairman. Ekurhuleni councillor Mike Mason, Natasha Michaels and Ian Ollis were elected as the three deputies. - Sapa
