Agricultural Science Must Drive South Africa's Future

South Africa's future will be determined by how effectively we strengthen food security, protect our natural resources and build resilient rural economies. Agriculture is central to achieving these national priorities, and science is the catalyst that will drive the innovation, productivity and resilience needed to secure the sector's long-term success.

As we mark National Science Month, we must recognise that science is not confined to laboratories or academic journals. Agricultural science delivers tangible solutions that improve lives, strengthen economies and safeguard our nation's future. Its impact is evident in healthier and more productive livestock, climate-resilient crop varieties, improved soil and water management, sustainable production systems and cutting-edge technologies that enable farmers to increase productivity, adapt to climate change and remain globally competitive.

For more than three decades, the ARC has been at the forefront of agricultural research, innovation and technology development in South Africa. As the country's premier agricultural research institution, we generate the scientific knowledge, technologies and evidence-based solutions that strengthen food and nutrition security, enhance agricultural productivity and support a more competitive and sustainable agricultural sector.

Our mandate extends beyond scientific excellence. We are committed to transforming research into practical solutions that create value across the entire agricultural value chain; from smallholder and emerging farmers to commercial producers, agribusinesses, policymakers and consumers. Through innovation, collaboration and scientific leadership, the ARC is helping to build a resilient agricultural sector that drives inclusive economic growth, supports rural development and secures a prosperous future for all South Africans.

South African agriculture stands at a defining moment. Climate change is reshaping rainfall patterns, intensifying droughts and floods, and placing unprecedented pressure on our farming systems. At the same time, emerging pests and diseases continue to threaten crops and livestock, while farmers are expected to produce more food with fewer natural resources and remain competitive in increasingly demanding global markets.

These challenges demand bold action, not incremental change. We cannot rely on yesterday's farming practices to secure tomorrow's food systems. South Africa needs science that anticipates risks, drives innovation and equips farmers with the knowledge and technologies to adapt, compete and thrive. That is the role of the Agricultural Research Council.

Across the country, ARC researchers are developing drought-tolerant and climate-resilient crop varieties that enable farmers to sustain production under increasingly unpredictable conditions. Our scientists are improving livestock genetics, advancing animal health, strengthening disease surveillance and developing technologies that protect and enhance one of South Africa's most valuable agricultural assets.

We are also advancing research that safeguards the natural resource base on which agriculture depends. Through innovations in soil science, water-use efficiency and climate-smart agriculture, we are helping farmers increase productivity while conserving the land and water resources that will sustain future generations. At the same time, the ARC is driving the adoption of precision agriculture, remote sensing, geographic information systems, artificial intelligence and data analytics to improve decision-making, optimise production, increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Our responsibility does not end with scientific discovery. Research delivers real value only when it translates into practical solutions that farmers can apply. That is why the ARC works closely with government, universities, commodity organisations, industry partners and farming communities to accelerate the transfer of knowledge, technologies and innovation from our laboratories to farms across South Africa.

This commitment is particularly important for emerging and smallholder farmers, whose success is critical to building an inclusive and resilient agricultural sector. By strengthening extension support, expanding research partnerships and developing locally relevant technologies, we are enabling more farmers to access innovation, improve productivity, participate meaningfully in agricultural value chains and contribute to South Africa's food and nutrition security.

South Africa's agricultural sector continues to outperform expectations despite increasingly difficult global conditions. Record agricultural exports, expanding production and continued employment across the agricultural value chain demonstrate the resilience of a sector underpinned by scientific research, innovation and collaboration. These achievements are not accidental. They are the product of decades of investment in research institutions, skilled scientists and partnerships that translate knowledge into practical solutions.

Agriculture contributes far beyond its direct share of gross domestic product. It supports rural economies, creates employment, drives agro-processing industries, strengthens export earnings and underpins national food security. Every scientific breakthrough that improves productivity or strengthens resilience creates benefits that extend throughout the economy. 

Research and innovation should never be viewed as costs to be managed, but as strategic investments in South Africa's future. Every rand invested in agricultural research generates returns through improved productivity, enhanced food security, stronger export competitiveness and greater resilience against climate-related risks.

Equally important is investing in people.

South Africa must deliberately invest in developing the next generation of agricultural scientists, veterinarians, engineers, data specialists and innovators who will shape the future of our food systems and drive the transformation of the agricultural sector. National Science Month should serve as a catalyst for inspiring young people to pursue careers in agricultural science and innovation, recognising agriculture as one of the country's most dynamic frontiers for scientific discovery, technological advancement and entrepreneurship.

The future of agriculture will be defined by biotechnology, artificial intelligence, genomics, precision farming, digital technologies and climate-smart production systems. South Africa has the expertise, infrastructure and scientific capability to lead in these fields, but leadership will require sustained investment in research, skills development and innovation. We must strengthen our research institutions, expand opportunities for young scientists and foster partnerships that accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies across the agricultural value chain.
