Pretoria - The Bavianspoort Correctional Centre near Pretoria is in lockdown after prison clashes, the Sowetan reported on Wednesday.

The lockdown, which included the cancellation of visits, followed a soccer tournament at the weekend which led to 20 inmates and six officials being injured.

Correctional Services spokesman Ofentse Morwane said the fight was gang-related and offenders used sharp objects and broken window panes.

“The situation was chaotic and the prison officials used batons and electric shields to separate the warring gang members,” said Morwane.

He said prisoners had sustained stab wounds and were taken to Mamelodi hospital. They had since been discharged.

Morwane said all visitations had immediately been stopped. - Sapa
