Former heavyweight boxing champion Gerhardus “Gerrie” Coetzee failed to make an appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

His defence lawyer Joshua Greeff said he was ill.

“Due to medical reasons, the accused can't attend court today. Necessary representations were submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP),” he said.

“We got correspondence from them (DPP) saying no decision has been made yet.”

The defence had asked for the charges to be withdrawn.

Coetzee, 57, is accused of working as a dental technician in October 2010 without being registered with the SA Dental Technicians' Council.

If convicted, he could be fined up to R10 000.

Magistrate Jasthree Steyn was told Coetzee was out on a warning.

“A warrant of arrest has been authorised for the accused. The warrant will be held over until September 7 (when the case resumes),” Steyn said.

Coetzee, known as the Boksburg Bomber, won the World Boxing Association title in 1983 and had 66 wins in his career.

He retired from boxing in 1993 and went into the dental business. He recently gave that up and began a handyman business. – Sapa
