THE KwaZulu Natal Department of Education (DOE) has launched an investigation into a Chatsworth creche after two-year-old Aariya Sewnarain allegedly fell from the second storey balcony of the facility, prompting concerns of safety and compliance.
Muzi Mahlambi, spokesperson for the DOE, said: “We will conduct a thorough investigation. Officials were tasked to investigate if the creche was registered and compliant with safety standards.”
Aariya’s dad, Atholl Sewnarain, said he was pleased that the relevant officials were investigating the matter.
"We are being advised on the legal recourse we will take against the creche owners, but for now, we are awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.
“We are allowing the law to take its course and police are keeping us informed. They are in constant contact with us, keeping us updated daily. We are pleased that the Department of Education is now investigating and we are hoping that the investigations will be finalised soon.
“We have so much on our plate right now. It's a lot. But the most important thing right now is my daughter’s healing. She is slowly gaining her strength and we will take each day as it comes during her journey to recovery,” he said.
Adeshini Naicker, director of Childline KZN, said they were deeply concerned by the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
“The safety and well-being of children should always be the top priority in any care setting. We strongly urge authorities to investigate this case thoroughly to ensure that any negligence or failure in duty of care is addressed. No child should ever be at risk in a space meant to nurture their development.
“We encourage parents, caregivers, and the broader community to advocate for better regulations and to hold institutions accountable for their actions. Childline KZN are offering support to the affected family. We call for greater vigilance in ensuring that all childcare facilities adhere to the highest safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future,” Naicker said.
