Kia managed to boost the popularity of its Sonet compact SUV by introducing a significantly cheaper LS base model in 2024, and now the Korean carmaker is aiming to achieve the same with the slightly larger Seltos.

The importer has quietly added a new 1.5-litre LS model to the family, which is available for R379,995 in manual guise and R404,995 as a CVT auto, as reported by Cars.co.za.

Not only does this lower the entry price of the Seltos range by R88,000, but it also positions the model closer to similarly-sized rivals like the Suzuki Grand Vitara, which starts at R358,900, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, from R342,500.

Like the bulk of the Seltos range, the LS is powered by the familiar 1.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 84kW and 144Nm.

The vehicle is also available with an 85kW 1.5 turbodiesel and 118kW 1.4 turbopetrol for those with deeper pockets, with the former kicking off at R521,995 and the latter stretching things to R626,995 in GT Line guise.

But what specification does the LS lose out on?

According to data listed on Duoporta, the new base model only loses out on a few of the items fitted as standard to the next-up-the-ladder 1.5 LX, including cruise control, a leather-covered steering wheel, auto-dimming interior mirror and LED daytime running lights.

As per the LX, the LS ships with 16-inch covered steel wheels, as well as manual air conditioning, touchscreen infotainment system, multi-function steering wheel, rear park distance control, stability control and six airbags.

The after-sales deal is also identical to the rest of the line-up, with buyers enjoying five years of unlimited kilometre warranty coverage as well as a four-year or 60,000km service plan.

Full details on the new model are expected to be released shortly.
