Sergio Perez’s seat in a Cadillac F1 car is reportedly confirmed for the 2026 season.
It's alleged that Checo will be presented on Saturday during the Miami Grand Prix during the General Motors launch, according to a German motoring publication.
General Motors is the parent company to Cadillac.
Cadillac’s advisor Mario Andretti, a former world champion, said Perez is among three drivers in contention for the seat.
Zhou Guanyu, the Ferrari reserve driver, is also in contention, according to Juan Pablo Montoya.
Cadillac initially said they would like to put an American driver in the seat, but realistically, that could set them back a couple of seasons for the learning curve alone.
Besides that, attaining super license points could be a difficult hurdle to get over, according to Andretti.
Getting two experienced drivers would be the best bet for the American racing outfit.
Besides Perez and Guanyu, there are a few drivers that stand to earn the seat, including former Mercedes man Valterri Bottas.
American Indy car driver Colton Herta and former F1 driver Mick Schumacher are also names in the mix.
Among all those names though, Perez’s comeback to Formula 1 will no doubt be a breeding ground for redemption, after he was sacked by Red Bull last year to make room for Liam Lawson - who failed to live up to the hype.
Team Perez has been relatively quiet about the move to Cadillac.
Lawson was sacked after a few races for failing to deliver in the senior team, and got demoted back to the Racing Bulls, where he seems to be more comfortable.
At 35-years-old and with 281 Grand Prix starts to his name, Perez has a plethora of knowledge to offer Cadillac as they venture out into the treacherous world of F1.
At the time of his exit from Red Bull, it looked as if Lawson was the new lion in the paddock looking to rival Checo’s place.
But the more the world of F1 came to learn just how difficult the Red Bull car is to drive, Perez’s exit doesn’t seem to be because he was not competent.
Red Bull have just been trigger happy with their second drivers instead of building a car for both drivers, instead of one, Max Verstappen.
Checo doesn’t look all that bad now, in fact, Lawson’s absolute stinker of a start to this season made him look like a race winner again.
Besides knowledge, Checo brings with him a significant backing from Mexican telecommunications mogul Carlos Slim.
Formula 1 has also signed an extended three-year contract, with the Mexican Grand Prix promoters to keep the race on the calendar until 2028. This year’s Mexican GP was the last of their contract.
According to sources, close to a half a million people attend the Mexican Grand Prix over the course of the race weekend, making it a highly profitable affair.
Bearing this in mind, bringing Checo back into the fold would be a major boost for the sport of F1.
