DURBAN - THE ZULULAND District municipality is set to spend R1.3 million on bursary assistance for last year’s Grade 12 pupils from the area who are heading to university and to honour 25 schools that achieved a 100% pass rate.

Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi will today host the pupils and 25 performing schools at the mayoral and bursary excellence awards.

The municipality said 100 pupils from the class of 2021 who have been accepted to university will be receiving R10 000 study assistance each. During the ceremony, the top 10 performers living in the district will also be honoured.

The mayor will also honour the 25 schools in the district that achieved a 100% pass rate.

Municipal spokesperson Zanele Mthethwa said it is important for the youth that did well to be honoured and provided with assistance.

“The Zululand District Municipality has a special focus on youth development and key among that is education and giving skills to our youth. This year we have spent R1.3 million to take 100 pupils to university and to honour 25 schools. We believe that those who do well should be rewarded so that we establish a culture of excellence in our schools,” she said.
