DURBAN - More than 12 people were injured and one commuter was killed in accidents across Durban at the weekend.

In a statement on Sunday, IPSS Medical Rescue responded to a motor vehicle accident on the N2 near Tinley Manor.

IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said, on arrival, paramedics established that a single vehicle had left the roadway and rolled multiple times.

“IPSS Medical Rescues advanced life support paramedics treated four persons on the scene before transporting patients to medical facilities,” he said.

At 7am on Saturday morning, Emer-G-Med Paramedics reported that one commuter had died and several were left with minor to moderate injuries after the minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned on Umgeni Road.

Kyle van Reenen, spokesperson for Emer-G-Med KZN, said medics arrived on the scene just after 7am to find the injured attempting to move away from the wreckage.

He said a triage area was established on the scene and the injured were treated and stabilised before being taken to various hospitals for further care.

“One commuter was found to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on arrival,” said Van Reenen.

He said the cause of the crash was unknown and that the accident would be investigated by the SAPS.

Later that day, KZN VIP medical paramedics responded to a crash at the intersection of Rudloff Road and Landfill Road in Pinetown.

Paramedic Gareth Jamieson said two babies, aged 1 and 3, and their mother were seriously injured in the accident.

He said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that two light motor vehicles had collided in a T-bone format.

The mother and her two children were stabilised on the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment, said Jamieson.

He said two people from the second vehicle sustained moderate injuries and were also stabilised on the scene before being transported to a hospital.

“At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown. However, the SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” he said.

Meanwhile, IPSS together with Lenmed eThekwini Hospital advanced life support paramedics responded to reports of a serious collision on the centre median of the N2, in the vicinity of the Ballito off-ramp on Saturday.

“Two occupants sustained serious injuries and were stabilised by IPSS Medical Rescue practitioners. A further occupant has sustained moderate injuries,” said Herbst. The three patients were transported to local medical facilities.

IPSS said the accident affected traffic on the N2 in both directions.
