Durban - Durban Metro police have paid tribute to popular police horse Fagan, who was put down after suffering ongoing arthritis in his legs.
Durban Metro Police said Fagan was put down on August 29, 2022.
In a statement, the police said Fagan, a Percheron gelding (male), joined the Metro Police Mounted Unit in 2002.
The statement said the horse retired from active service in 2020, after almost 20 years of service.
According to Metro Police, Fagan had been receiving ongoing treatment for arthritis in his legs.
“Fagan was a crowd favourite, known as the 'Great White One' by children, especially on the beachfront. He was the only Grey horse in the Unit,” said the statement.
Metro Police said Fagan was ridden by many members, but lastly by Police Inspector Gordon Wreyford.
“He served eThekwini Council faithfully for 20 years, representing Metro Police on patrol, parades, special events, Cop17 and World Cup 2010 amongst others. He will be sadly missed,” said the Metro Police.
Commenting on the post, a Facebook user wrote: “RIP Fagan, thank you for serving society unconditionally.”
Umbilo community activist and former CPF chair Heather Roos said: “RIP Member Fagan. These horses are a big part of Metro Police.”
Durban Metro police Inspector Lee Spencer Bryant said: “Rest in Peace, Fagan, many good memories with you…”
