Durban – The Durban Regional Court sentenced a 53-year-old man from Isipingo to an effective five years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Sajith Ramlutchan Ramlall made several court appearances before he was convicted and sentenced.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said on November 26, 2020, police received information that a man who stayed in Ramsunder Road in Isipingo Rail was in possession of child pornography and they began investigating.

She said in December 2020, police searched the accused’s home. A laptop and two hard drives were seized.

“Forensic analysis was done on the devices and images of child pornography were identified,” she said.

Gwala said Ramlall was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment with three years suspended.

“The accused will serve five years behind bars,” she said.

This comes as South Africa commemorates National Child Protection week which runs from May 29 until June 5.

The SAPS urged residents to report all forms of abuse directed at children.

“Working together we can make this province a safe place for every child,” said Gwala.
