Durban - The mayor of Msunduzi Municipality Mzimkhulu Thebolla is set to meet with his counterpart from the uMngeni Municipality Chris Pappas to discuss the supply of electricity to the Hilton area.

In a notice posted on its website, the Msunduzi Municipality said Thebolla will hold a bilateral meeting with Pappas at the Hilton Community hall on Wednesday afternoon.

Papas declined to speak on the issues that will be raised, saying that it would be pre-empting the meeting.

Attempts to speak to Thebolla were also unsuccessful.

The Msunduzi Municipality is responsible for the supply of electricity to the Hilton area, but the area falls under the uMngeni Municipality.

The supply to the area is erratic which has triggered a number of complaints.

Shortly after the DA won the uMngeni Local Municipality after the local government elections in 2021, Pappas revealed that in the long term, uMngeni wanted to be in charge of electricity supplies to all its areas.

In the short term, it wanted Msunduzi to relinquish the maintenance of basic infrastructure such as street lights to uMngeni and pay the municipality for this.

Hilton is one of the wealthiest areas in the KZN Midlands, with big estates where houses can sell for up to R8 million.

UMngeni had previously said it wanted a reliable electricity service with stable supply to its residents which would also generate revenue.
