US singer and fashion designer, Pharrell Williams, made a surprising revelation at the 2025 Met Gala about his signature shimmering mouth accessory: what many assumed to be elaborate grillz are, in fact, custom-made gold retainers
The Louis Vuitton men’s creative director attended the 2025 Met Gala and served as one of the co-chairs of the globally acclaimed fashion event.
In an interview with "ESSENCE", Williams was asked about the full gold grill in his mouth, and he revealed that it’s Invisalign retainers, just made in gold.
“Well, truth be told, these are my Invisaligns. I used my Invisalign trays and got them done in gold. That’s what dandy do (referencing the 2025 theme). But these are my Invisaligns, they keep my teeth straight,” he said.
Williams paired his gold invisalign with a classic suit with a textured blazer made of 100, 000 pearls and flared black pants.
Fans loved the concept of the gold retainers, and many expressed that they would love to do the same.
“He just unlocked a new level of grill lol. This is why we dandy,” @sharon_ayi wrote.

While the Invisalign brand also added, “When your smile’s as intentional as your fit … gold-level confidence.”
What are retainers?
Retainers essentially are orthodontic devices that help your teeth to be straight. They are mostly used for people who wore braces and since teeth can shift even after wearing braces, retainers prevent that by keeping them straight.
They also come in different forms, which include wires or acrylic.

The theme of the Met Gala 2025 was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which celebrated the Black Dandyism fashion.
The 51-year-old graced the red carpet with his wife, Helen Lasichanh, who was dressed by him in Louis Vuitton stockings, a black leather corset, leather blazer paired with a brown Louis Vuitton bag.
Williams also dressed Doechii, Sabrina Carpenter, Lisa, Jeremy Allen White, Future, Pusha T, Henry Taylor, Callum Turner, as well Malcolm Washington.
