Adding cocoa to your morning coffee is a simple hack to elevate your mood and mental clarity.

If you rely on your morning coffee to kickstart the day, there might be a way to make it work even harder for you — and it involves adding just one common kitchen ingredient.

Health expert Dr Karan Rajan and nutritionist Corey Rodriguez recently shared a tip on TikTok that combines coffee with cocoa for a potential brain boost.

The idea is based on the concept of “food synergy” — the way certain foods can complement each other to enhance their health benefits.

Corey explained that mixing cocoa into your coffee could lead to greater mental clarity and improved mood. That’s because caffeine (found in coffee) and theobromine (a compound in cocoa) work together to sharpen focus and elevate alertness.

Cocoa or cacao – what’s the difference?

While many of us have cocoa powder at home, there’s also cacao – a less processed version that retains more nutrients. Cacao tends to have a stronger, more natural flavour and is often seen as the healthier choice.

Cocoa, typically found on supermarket shelves, has usually undergone more heat treatment, which may reduce some of its nutritional properties. It’s also often sweetened or flavoured.

Still, both forms can offer benefits when used in moderation – especially when added to your coffee.

What Cocoa can do for your brain

Cocoa is rich in polyphenols, compounds linked to improved blood flow and brain function. Research suggests these may help lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases and support healthy blood sugar levels.

Raw cacao may be even more beneficial, with studies highlighting its powerful antioxidant properties. Recognised by many health experts as a superfood, cacao is said to support heart health, reduce inflammation, and improve cholesterol levels.

Not only can it support physical health, but cacao’s natural compounds are also associated with mood regulation and cognitive support — making it a smart, easy addition to your daily routine.

So next time you’re brewing your morning cup, consider stirring in a spoonful of cocoa or cacao. It might just give your brain — and your mood — the boost it needs.
