Rethink Mother's Day: gifts that show you actually care (no more slippers!)
MOTHER'S DAY
Moms are asking (in subtle, sigh-filled ways) to be seen and appreciated beyond their role of cook, cleaner, homework supervisor, and family CEO.

Okay, by now, most of us have some kind of plan for Mother’s Day, or at least we think we do. But if your grand gesture involves that all-too-familiar hamper from that store (yes, the one that has us questioning our maths skills at the till), maybe take a moment to think again.
This year, can we officially retire the slippers and gown combo? Or worse, another air fryer or kitchen gadget that screams, “Get back in the kitchen, Ma!”
We know those make life easier, but let’s be honest: they’re not personal. They’re practical. And there’s a big difference.
Here’s the thing: moms aren’t asking for the moon. But they are asking (in subtle, sigh-filled ways) to be seen and appreciated beyond their role of cook, cleaner, homework supervisor, and family CEO.
And as someone who has kept too many homemade "IOU hugs" and gift cards that promise to wash the dishes "next time," I can tell you now it's time to level up.
A Braai is not a gift if mom still has to host
We love a Sunday lunch or a lekker family braai, but let’s not fool ourselves: if mom is still the one prepping the salad, corralling the kids, and cleaning up while everyone else is relaxing, that’s not a celebration. That’s just another Sunday.
And please, Mother’s Day doesn’t end at 5pm. Neither should your effort. That beautiful Instagram post or WhatsApp status with “Love you, Ma” is cute and all, but consistency is the real love language.
Experiences over things! Whether it’s a nice dinner, a weekend getaway, or a picnic in the park, spending time together means so much.

Real ways to show up for moms (that don’t end with a sink full of dishes). If you’re wondering how to make Mother’s Day truly special this year, here are some personal, thoughtful and doable ideas:
- Fund that staycation: A night away (even locally) with no kids yelling “Mama” at 6am? Game changer. Airbnb, a hotel deal, or even a quiet guesthouse, just make it happen.
- Book that spa day: Not a pamphlet. Not a “we’ll go someday.” An actual booking with times, directions, and maybe a reminder that she shouldn’t be doing laundry when she gets back. Experiences over things. Whether it’s a nice dinner, a weekend getaway, or a picnic in the park, spending time together means so much.
- Take over the house admin: Whether it's monitoring homework, packing lunchboxes, or handling the “have you washed your socks?” chaos, take it over for a week. Not just the Sunday.
- Make something from the heart: A memory scrapbook, a short video message from the family, or even a handwritten letter (yes, those still exist), anything that shows you really see her.
- Give her time: Time to nap. Time to finish a cup of tea while it’s still hot. Time to call her bestie without someone tugging on her leg. Time to be ... herself.
Below is a helpful note to sons, daughters, and dads
Consistency is key. Let Mother’s Day be a reminder, not a once-off performance. Make it count, make it personal, and for goodness’ sake, leave the kitchen gadgets on the shelf this time.
Think along the lines of meal kits, book clubs, or streaming services, something that caters to her interests and provides ongoing enjoyment. The likes of the Pick ‘n Pay wine club if your mom is a wine lover.
At the end of the day, it’s the thought and effort that count the most. Moms truly appreciate gifts that reflect their interests and show them how much they are loved and valued!
With that, happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms, vice moms (the big sisters). Whether you’re in the ‘burbs, ekasi, on the farm, or in the city, we see you, and you deserve to be celebrated every single day.
