This surprise appearance comes two years after he announced a break from touring due to the challenges posed by Tourette’s syndrome, which affected his ability to perform at the iconic Glastonbury Festival in June 2023.
During his set at Glastonbury, attendees supported him with their voices as Capaldi visibly struggled with his symptoms.
Addressing the crowd, he expressed his anxieties about performing, stating he felt “sh** scared.”
Despite taking three weeks to recuperate, he revealed that he still needed to prioritise his mental and physical health, leading to his decision to step back from the spotlight.
“I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve,” he shared in a social media post.
Fast forward to last Friday evening, fans were treated to a surprise at Tom Walker’s charity gig in Edinburgh, all for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a vital organisation dedicated to suicide prevention.
In a remarkable gesture of camaraderie and support, Capaldi took to the stage unannounced, momentarily putting aside the mental burdens that had kept him away from his fans.
Walker expressed his delight at Capaldi's impromptu appearance, noting that it was a last-minute decision that filled the room with electric energy.
“For him to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones, the noise, and the expectations was perfect. I’m buzzing to have been a part of it,” he told the BBC.
To maintain the event’s intimacy, attendees were requested not to record any performances, with phones sealed away during the set.
