Rainfall expected to ease in KZN after heavy rains cause massive floods

DURBAN – KwaZulu-Natal KZN residents will get a short break from rainfall after heavy rains flooded roads and affected water supply in parts of the province.

South African Weather Service (Saws) forecaster Wiseman Dlamini has said not much rainfall is expected over the weekend.

“No rain is expected on Friday,” Dlamini said.

“There is a 30 percent chance of rainfall accompanied by thundershowers on Saturday and Sunday in western KZN.”

“A 30 percent of showers are also expected on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week,” Dlamini said.

On Wednesday, Durban received 37mm of rainfall, Virginia received 76mm, Margate 40mm, Richards Bay received 5.2mm and Pietermaritzburg received 1.4mm, he said.

The rainfall left roads flooded in areas south of Durban.

According to reports, the N2 north by Galleria Mall in eManzimtoti was flooded due to heavy rainfall.

Further south, Warner Beach, past Baggies Road was also flooded.

The area from Quality Street towards the refinery in the Jacobs area was also flooded. At the bottom of Balfour and Quality streets, a manhole was lying in the middle of the road.

Earlier this week the Zululand District Municipality issued a flood warning. The KwaKhambi Waterworks, Abaqulusi was flooded. The water supply in wards 2 and 3 was expected to be affected.

Municipal spokesperson Zanele Mthethwa said: “KwaKhambi Waterworks was severely affected due to flooding and there are also other areas affected at Nongoma, eDumbe, Ulundi and Phongolo. Water supply was badly impacted but our technical teams are working around the clock to attend to the affected areas. We are hoping that with the rainfall subsiding, the team will be able to fix all the water schemes affected.”
