DURBAN - A private security company has arrested a suspect who had allegedly robbed a supermarket, jumped into a public minibus taxi and fled the scene.

It is alleged that Checksave supermarket in Brickfield Road was robbed last Wednesday evening.

Urban Defence said they had received a panic alert from the supermarket and their tactical officers and armed response officers were dispatched to the scene.

When the officers arrived, they established that four armed suspects robbed the store and fled in a white Nissan Almera and another suspect had fled using a public taxi. A full description of the suspect was provided by car guards, who accompanied the officers to point out the suspect. Urban officers then mobilised in search of the taxi.

“The taxi was spotted on the N3 Durban bound and members were able to intercept it on the N3 near Tollgate Bridge. The suspect was positively identified and was placed under arrest and handed over to SAPS,” Urban Defence said.

“Follow up investigations conducted by Mayville detectives and SAPS District Trio Task Team members on the morning of March 10 had proven fruitful and resulted in a further two suspects being arrested. The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was identified as an Uber with the driver being a part of the gang.”

Urban Defence said the vehicle was seized, the suspects were detained and all exhibits were entered into SAPS 13.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the suspects had appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

“It is alleged by the complainant that on March 9, 2022 at about 6:05pm she was with her colleagues at business premises on Brickfield Road in Mayville when three armed men entered the shop and demanded money. At gunpoint they took an undisclosed amount cash and fled the scene. The suspects aged 21 and 32 were later arrested for robbery and detained at Mayville SAPS.”
