LAST week saw an end of Master ChefSA’s second season and as foodie lovers are starting to get withdrawal symptoms the cookery television gods have brought the second season of the Ultimate Braai Master. It happens to be right on time as we are about to celebrate Heritage Day, otherwise known as National Braai Day.

Here we celebrate and embrace what makes us different from one another as well as what brings us together.

Last year, I asked young people what Heritage Day means to them.

Some said it’s about celebrating our cultures, others said it is just a day to hang out with friends.

Whatever your interpretation of the day is, there will be some braaiing going on.

To a lot of people braaiing has always been about the meat, pap and a relish until cooking shows such as the Ultimate Braai Master showed us you can have gourmet type of meals prepared on a braai.

For this week I have prepared a simple side dish to go along with the meat. If you happen to be braaiing at home, ensure that you have a wide range of food from different food groups. Have fun but also remember that moderation is key and keep safe.
