Cape Town - Hashim Amla resigned as the Proteas Test captain on Wednesday following the New Year’s Test against England at Newlands.

Here are some of the highs and lows of his Test career.

* Aged 21, made his Proteas Test debut against India in Kolkata in November 2004. Becomes the first South African of Indian descent to represent the country in Test cricket since readmission into international sport

* Dropped from the South African team following a poor series against England in January 2005. Amla scored just 36 runs in four innings

* Regained his place in the Proteas Test side in April 2006 against New Zealand at Newlands, and scored his first hundred of his career in this match too (149)

* Scored his first Test century away from home against India in Chennai in 2008 with a sparkling 159

* Went on to the honours board at Lord’s in London with 104 not out against England in 2008

* Makes his big breakthrough on the international stage on the February 2010 tour of India. Scores a maiden double hundred (253 not out) in Nagpur, which was followed by centuries in both innings of the next Test at the iconic Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata

* Breaks the South African record for the highest score in Test cricket in July 2012.

* Becomes the first South African to score a triple hundred with 311 not out against England at The Oval in London. Batted for 13 hours and 10 minutes, and faced 529 balls, hitting 35 fours

* In August 2012 at Lord’s, scored a second-innings 121 out of South Africa’s total of 351 to set up a third-Test victory over England, which clinched the series 2-0

* Scored a majestic second-innings 196 against Australia in Perth in December 2012, and along with AB de Villiers’s 169, laid the foundation for the Proteas’ handsome 309-run victory that secured a 1-0 series triumph

* Appointed as the Proteas Test captain in June 2014 following the retirement of Graeme Smith a few months earlier

* Leads South Africa for the first time, against Sri Lanka away from home in July 2014. They win the two-match series 1-0, the Proteas’ first series victory in that country since 1993. Amla scored 139 not out in the second Test in Colombo

* Scores his third double hundred of his career (208) in December 2014, against West Indies in Centurion

* Comes under pressure as captain following a 3-0 series defeat against India away from home in November and December 2015, as well as a 241-run loss to England in the Boxing Day Test in Durban. Batting form also under scrutiny as Amla last scored a hundred in December 2014

Amla quits Proteas captaincy

* Finds his batting form again with his fourth double hundred (201) in the 2016 New Year’s Test against England at Newlands

* Resigns as the Proteas Test captain in January 2016 following the Newlands Test against England
