Johannesburg - People who perpetuate racism are motivated by the wealth they amassed during the apartheid era, the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) said on Tuesday.

“Racists who continue to undermine our democratic gains are motivated by the ill-gotten wealth they got during apartheid,” said YCLSA national secretary Mluleki Dlelanga.

“They continue to enjoy these ill-gotten gains even 21 years after the democratic dispensation.”

Dlelanga was speaking at the commemoration of the death of SACP leader Joe Slovo in Soweto.

Some leaders of the African National Congress, South African Communist Party, Congress of South African Trade Unions and government attended the event at Avalon cemetery – the burial site of Slovo.

Dlelanga’s remarks come after several racists statements were posted on social media at the weekend, causing an uproar, and prompting individuals and political parties to lay criminal charges and lodge complaints at the SA Human Rights Commission.
