Johannesburg - The ANC has fired one its employees that was arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit heist in Dobsonville, Soweto.
The party plans to also institute disciplinary proceedings against Errol Velile Present who was named as one of the four suspects linked to the heist.
“The ANC on 18th of July 2018, served Errol Velile Present with a letter of summary dismissal from its employ following his arrest and appearance in court on allegations of a number of heinous crimes. The ANC expects from its members and employees to respect the laws of the land and not be involved in any criminal activity," said the party's spokesperson Pule Mabe.
Present and his three co-accused, who have been charged with armed robbery and possession of hijacked vehicles, appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.
The court case was postponed to July 31.
Present will have to give reasons why his ANC membership should not be suspended while a disciplinary action is underway.
"Present was further informed that in his capacity as a member of the ANC, the organisation will immediately institute disciplinary proceedings against him, in accordance with Rule 25 of the ANC constitution and that in accordance with Rule 25.56 and Rule 25.57 accorded him an opportunity to indicate reasons why the organisation should not immediately exercise its rights to temporarily suspend his membership of the ANC pending the outcomes of the disciplinary proceedings," said Mabe.
Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba was the first to reveal the details on Wednesday saying he was reliably informed that one of the four suspects arrested for alleged involvement in the heist was a person employed by the ANC at its headquarters at Luthuli House.
It is also being reported that Present has been linked to a farm scandal involving former rural development and land reform minister Gugile Nkwinti, in which he was given a farm worth R97 million, News24 reported.
