Port Elizabeth – The Eastern Cape Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs has confirmed that it was taking the necessary steps within the confines of the law to ensure that AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo’s monthly salary is terminated.

Dalindyebo is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence at the East London Correctional Centre on charges relating to kidnapping, assault, arson and defeating the ends of justice.

The monarch has been admitted to hospital twice after engaging in a hunger strike and is also still receiving a salary of R1.1 million.

Spokesperson for the Department of Local Government in the Eastern Cape, Mamnkeli Ngam, told the African News Agency (ANA) that the department was busy following processes within the confines of the law so that Dalindyebo’s salary could be terminated.

“We want to make sure everything that is being done is within the confines of the law so that we may terminate his salary as a matter of urgency,”said Ngam.

The Department of Correctional Services in the Eastern Cape confirmed that Dalindyebo was still currently undergoing treatment at Life East London Hospital.

Royal family spokesperson, Nkosi Daludomo Mtirara previously told ANA that the royal family did not consider Dalindyebo a king anymore and that a letter had been forwarded to government to have his title withdrawn.

Only when President Jacob Zuma has announced his decision, may the certificate proclaiming his kingship be withdrawn.
