Relationships are hard. And holding it down while in the limelight takes superhuman strength. It’s no wonder our favourite celebrity couples struggle to go the distance. Could it be the pressure of fame or a clash of egos that cause relationships to falter?

And then there are those who change their status updates like underwear. Are they on again? Are they off again? Just stop toying with our feelings and make it official.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

When these two first hooked up in 2010, Selena’s fans feared Justin’s bad boy reputation would rub off on her. Rumour has it that even her bestie, Taylor Swift, wasn’t happy about the relationship. It wasn’t until January the following year that they confirmed their romance by displaying serious PDA while on holiday. Their new love also sparked the Jelena hashtag.

Their love affair has been tumultuous at times, with cheating rumours on Justin’s part doing the rounds, as well as bust-ups and beef taking place with Selena’s ex-flame, The Weeknd.

Spanning seven years and three splits, their very public break-ups and make-ups took their toll on the songstress. But now it seems things are over for good for the pair. Latest reports seem to indicate that Justin and Hailey Baldwin have tied the knot.

AKA and Bonang Matheba

If there was ever a couple that deserved their own reality show, it would be these two.

Rumour has it that AKA and Queen B’s volatile relationship was doomed from the very beginning - they both started seeing each other while AKA’s baby mama DJ Zinhle was pregnant with their daughter, Kairo, in 2015.

Apparently, their affair had been an open secret; the only one that wasn’t in on it was Zinhle.

During their three-year relationship, the couple used the power of social media to their whim, posting lovey dovey tweets and #couplegoal selfies while on vacay.

And then in 2016 they ended things by calling it quits on their respective Twitter accounts. Or so we thought. Days later, fans found out they had pulled off the biggest social media coup by duping everyone.

Fast-forward to 2018, and the now-exes are airing their dirty laundry in public.

AKA fired the first salvo with his dis track Beyoncé. “Waited two years just to see you with your weave off What that say about your character, you was f**king me while I was paying damages,” he raps.

During an interview with Drum magazine, Bonang hit back, saying: “I miss nothing or I don’t know, maybe he was funny, I guess that’s it.”

Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and Bella Hadid

How do you let the world know that you’ve rekindled your romance? Go Instagram official. That’s what The Weeknd and Bella Hadid did when spotted in Tokyo a few months ago after reports started doing the rounds that they were back on.

Their love story is not unique, but their entire relationship and subsequent breakup played out before the world. It took its toll on Bella after they first split in 2016.

The couple started quietly dating in 2015; this after Bella declined to feature on Abel’s album artwork for Beauty Behind the Madness. Then came the split in 2016. The two then had a high-profile run-in at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show where The Weeknd was performing while Bella strutted down the runway. The glance between the exes sparked a series of memes.

A romance between Selena Gomez and Abel was short-lived amid rumours she’d reconciled with Justin Bieber. Suffice to say, Abel and Bella seem to be back on.

Babes Wodumo and Mampintsha

She’s the Queen of Gqom and he’s the man who set her on the path to superstardom.

But details of their relationship are sketchy, to say the least, and shrouded in controversy.

In June, Babes dropped a bombshell while giving an interview on MetroFM.

She revealed they had split because of his alleged abuse.

For the longest time the couple had denied they were even dating. After the reports of abuse and ensuing split had surfaced, things became confusing as a game of he said, she said appeared to be playing out in the public eye.

Babes even went as far as accusing Mampintsha of hacking her Instagram account after he “posted” pics from their engagement party.

She’s also claimed she’s seeing someone else, but refuses to elaborate. However, her now-deleted Instagram images tell another story.
