Durban - At least 11 people have been killed in an apparent ambush on the R74 in Colenso, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday evening. Police have not officially confirmed it but it is alleged that the shooting stems from ongoing taxi route wars between rival associations.

At this stage, reports from the scene are that the people were travelling along the stretch of road when the minibus taxi that they were in came under fire. It is alleged that the occupants were travelling from a taxi driver's funeral in the area of Ematimotolo area.

KZN police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said, on the R74 road between Colenso and Weenen unknown persons jumped onto the road from  the bushes and opened fire at the taxi.

"Unconfirmed information for now indicates that passengers are from a taxi association in Gauteng attending the funeral of one of their members. The crime scene is still active. Detectives from the SAPS Provincial Task Team in Durban have been dispatched to the scene.  There are multiple fatalities and detectives will only be in a position to confirm the numbers once the crime scene experts have combed the scene," he said.
